Eat Healthy and Stay Smart

This morning I opened up my mouth and swallowed a tablespoon straight of Fish Oil. I remember my doctor telling me the benefits of taking fish oil straight versus swallowing the fish oil capsules. In liquid form it will absorb more efficiently into our body. The capsule will take longer to absorb because our body has to break down the capsule first. Also in order to get the amount of fish oil I need into my body I would need to take so many more capsules. Either way I get fish oil into my body, it's a good thing. Fish oil is a great source of Omega-3 fatty acids and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
Fish Oil is extracted from fish, but the fish does not produce the fish oil. It is accumulated from the fish's diet including microalgae and preyfish. There are so many benefits from fish oil that I have noticed in my life but it's always nice to find a new article that enforces why I am taking it. First of all I notice that my skin is better, I feel more awake then finally omega-3 fatty acids help with your brain.
The most recent article I found is about the elderly and their mental performance. Sound vitamins they measured beyond omega-3 included Vitamin D and B12. Keep yourself healthy and make sure you're taking in what you need.

Do you own a mini drugstore at home?

One of my favorite sites to visit is the Maximized Living website. There are a lot of information on the website about different health topics that goes on. It's a great resource to learn ways to take care of yourself without succumbing to the medical model. I have learned and hope that all of our readers out there will that sometimes even so someone says one thing we should always learn more about it then make our decision.

This time the article that caught my attention is on Cholesterol medication. "Is this Malicious Health Scandal Stealing Your Money?" Prescription drugs hit home with me because both of my parents are taking pills every day to keep "healthy" but it seems every few months instead of taking less pills they are taking more and more. My mother has a shoe box of bottles and among them includes cholesterol pills.  Wouldn't you think it's a concern when the drugs are piling up at home and not dwindling down?

Another interesting article that I found in regards to statins was at Dr. Mercola's website.  It was about 11 Dangerous Statins. After reading this article it makes me realize that majority drugs out there have side effects which causes more problems. These problems are countered by adding more pills to the mix. In the end we end up with a drug cocktail. Oh yummy! "Your body NEEDS cholesterol—it is important in the production of cell membranes, hormones, vitamin D and bile acids that help you to digest fat. Cholesterol also helps your brain form memories and is vital to your neurological function."

To be fair I read an article by Mayo Clinic about Cholesterol-lowering drugs. One statement caught my attention "If the only risk factor you have is high cholesterol, you may not need medication because your risk of heart attack and stroke could otherwise be low. High cholesterol is only one of a number of risk factors for heart attack and stroke." So even the doctors at Mayo Clinic admits that High cholesterol does not indicate that you are at high risk for heart problems. So high cholesterol does not mean you need to take a statin to lower it.

They posted a list of other risk factors that comes into play for if you are in risk of heart disease:

Other risk factors
Before you're prescribed a statin, your cholesterol level is considered along with other risk factors for cardiovascular disease, including:

  • Family history of high cholesterol or cardiovascular disease
  • Inactive (sedentary) lifestyle
  • High blood pressure
  • Age older than 55 if you're a man, or older than 65 if you're a woman
  • Poor general health
  • Having diabetes
  • Overweight or obesity
  • Smoking
  • Narrowing of the arteries in your neck, arms or legs (peripheral artery disease)
I am ultimately impressed because not many people think about the whole picture. We are living in a society of people who want the instant cure. The pill to make you skinny. The pill to make your pains go away. The pill to make you pretty, etc.

There are so many ways we can take care of ourselves and lower our risk for heart disease. Why must we be lazy about it then blame the health care system if we fail. It is our own undoing. Watch what you eat. Go out and exercise. Our body is our own business, you only get one. Take care of it today.

Birth Control, healthy or not?

A friend of mine have recently been prescribed birth control pills for her acne. The doctor told her that her hormones are imbalanced and that birth controls pills would help her regulate that so she won't have break outs. She is among the several million people out there who wants the easy way out for their health. The toxicity causing acne and break outs I would like to talk about another time. The focus today is on birth control, something I have very little knowledge about but because of my friend I am curious to learn about them.

According to the Planned Parenthood website they give you birth control pills at a glance:
  • Take a pill each day to prevent pregnancy
  • Safe, effective, and convenient
  • Easy to get with a prescription
  • Cost about $15-$50 each month
The way that some birth control pills work is that they contain two hormones: estrogen and progestin. When taking the pills, they prevent woman's ovaries from releasing eggs - ovulation. Hormones also thin the lining of the uterus and thickens the woman's cervical mucus to block sperm from joining with an egg.

One thing I love is that where is says Birth Control Pills are safe is also says "But all medications have some risks, so safety is a concern when choosing a birth control method." So some risks includes high blood pressure, it's bad if you have had breast cancer, blood clotting problems, lupus, diabetes, liver disease, smoke, etc. This surprises me because in my friend's family there has been diabetes, high blood pressure and heart problems. Did her doctor look into that before prescribing it?

I stumbled upon an article about blood clots and Birth Control Pills. In particular it referred to a research study done by the FDA on pills containing drospirenone. They estimated 10 in 10,000 women taking the drospirenone drug would get a blood clot per year. "A clot in the blood vessels can prove fatal if it breaks loose and travels to the lungs, heart or brain." Not good. This is a concern because it includes popular birth control pills Yaz and Yasmin.

The second half of the article included interviews with doctors and people on their views of the data. One person stated that if the doctor prescribes it then they will go with it. As much as I know doctors do not intend on harming their patients but honestly how much do they really know about the drug. They know what they are told by the pharmaceutical reps. The best thing for any decision is to make sure you make an educated decision. Do the research.

Arsenic Consuption in our Water and Apple Juice

Arsenic is a semi-metal element that is odorless and tasteless. It was once a popular poison for assassins and unhappy widows. There has been a lot of debate lately on how harmful is the little bits of arsenic we get in water and apple juice. According to the Environmental Protections Agency (EPA) that there are non-cancer effects which includes "thickening and discoloration of the skin, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting; diarrhea; numbness in hands and feet; partial paralysis; and blindness." But Arsenic has also been linked to several including bladder, lungs, skin, kidney, nasal passages, liver and prostate.
I am not sure about you but reading this makes me concern. Then why are we letting juice companies tell us that the little bits of arsenic we are feeding not just ourselves but also our children is okay? It's not. In an interview with Fox News, Michael Taylor (FDA's deputy commissioner for foods) said "We continue to think that apple juice is generally safe based on the fact that the vast majority of samples are very low. But we want to minimize these exposures as much as possible."
Currently the FDA uses 23 parts per billion as a guide to judge whether apple juice is contaminated. Consumer Reports published an article recently about arsenic in apple juice. They tested several popular brands of apple juice to find there were higher levels of arsenic. "Five samples of apple juice and four of grape juice had total arsenic levels exceeding the 10 ppb federal limit for bottled and drinking water. Levels in the apple juices ranged from 1.1 to 13.9 ppb, and grape-juice levels were even higher, 5.9 to 24.7 ppb. Most of the total arsenic in our samples was inorganic, our tests showed." Consumer groups also stated that the FDA's level is too high and isn't enforced with enough urgency.
Not too long ago popular TV Doctor, Dr. Oz did a program that did similar testings. He was criticized and the FDA responded saying that most of the arsenic were organic so they were harmless. Since then the FDA now has new research that says that arsenic was really inorganic and that makes them harmful now. Doesn't this make you concerned? Sometimes I question if the FDA is concerned about the people or are they concerned about making the big corporations happy?

Childhood Obesity, what does that mean?

I stumbled upon this article yesterday: “Obese Third Grader Taken From Mom, Placed in Foster Care.” The boy was a third grader who weighted more than 200 lbs which is obviously not good. The state took him away and put him foster care. This is not the only incident but it brought up a very interesting topic.

Childhood Obesity has become very prominent over the past few years. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, in the past 30 years childhood obesity has more than tripled. This is very alarming and bring obese is a precursor for several diseases including cancer, diabetes and many problems.

I do empathize with the parents who are in this situation. Yet the best way for a parent and family to help the child is to change their lifestyle to help encourage change in their children’s lifestyle. This refers to activities in the family, eating habits, hobbies and much more.

So what happened in the past 30 years to make childhood obesity so prominent today? Well lifestyle in general has changed. ‘Let’s Move” is a program throughout the United States that is supported by First Lady, Michelle Obama. The program encourages keeping our youth physically active. They state children today experience a different lifestyle. “Walks to and from school have been replaced by car and bus rides. Gym class and after-school sports have been cut; afternoons are now spent with TV, video games, and the Internet. Parents are busier than ever and families eat fewer home-cooked meals. Snacking between meals is now commonplace.”

So what can parents do? According to KidsHealth, the best way to prevent child obesity is to changing the way your family interacts with one another through eating, exercises, how you spend time together. “Helping kids lead healthy lifestyles begins with parents who lead by example.”

The best practice to raising a healthy child is to lead by example. In January 2012, Dr. Hugh Wegwerth at Bandana Chiropractic and Wellness Center will be hosting a workshop, the “Extreme Makeover”. The Makeover offers an historical view of how our eating habits have changed for the worse as well as simple, easy to implement, baby steps to making healthy living part of your lifestyle. It is free and open to the public, call 651-354-8343 to register today.

Vitamin D3 in a New Bottle

Last year around this time I was sitting in a lecture by guest speaker Dr. Mayer Eisenstein. Our clinic had invited him to Minnesota to give a lecture about Vaccines. I remember him being a very pleasant man with a lot to say.
As he discussed vaccines he brought up a very important vitamin. Vitamin D3. It is something that we get naturally from sunlight. The problem though is that most of us are not outside bathing in the sun anymore, we are spending our time inside. It helps with our immune system and when you are sick you should be getting in more Vitamin D3.

What was recommended is that if you are ill you should be taking in 1,000 IU for every pound you weigh. Example if I weight 150 lbs, which I don't, I should be taking 150,000 IU. The company that Dr. Mayer Eisenstein has offers it in 50,000 IU pills, Home First. We do carry these in our office.

The other one we carry in our office is the Maximized Living Vitamin D3. In a few weeks we will be carrying a newer version of the Maximized Living Vitamin D3. It is the same price but what is the difference? First of all the quantity is the first thing that I noticed.
Our original bottle has 100 capsules while the new one has 33 capsules. So what are the benefits of these new bottles? The new bottle now not only has the 5,000 IU of Vitamin D3 but also they have added "1 Billion CFU of powerful probiotics with an organic whole fruit and vegetable blend."

How do you know what is good food?

That's an interesting question. I was reading an article I saw on yahoo about the "5 Worst Fast-Food Breakfasts ( and what you should order instead)" . Interesting article that goes over Starbucks, Mcdonalds, Jamba Juice, Subway and several others menus. I didn't think they could find anything that would be actually "good" but there are a few options. Besides looking at calories you should also look at content of the food you are consuming. A common themed option they approve of is oatmeal which I agree with too. It's a good alternative than any deep friend breakfast. Also when you get anything from Mcdonalds it's not really cooked for you it's usually thrown into the microwave. Same thing goes for any of the sandwiches you pick up at Caribou Coffee or Starbucks right now. How healthy can that be?

First off what is a calorie? I mean in this society we are surrounded by calorie counters. Do they know what they are counting? According to Dictionary.com is the "a quantity of food capable of producing such an amount of energy." Now that we got that on the table how much energy does your body really need? Well if you try out the Calories Per Day Calculator  it gives you an idea and that varies by several factors such as your height, current weight and how active you are. So my final conclusion, as nice as calorie counting may seem if you aren't watching what you eat and how active you are, you're not necessaricly being healthy.

You can eat 1500 calories of candy for the day and all your meals but is your body receiving everything that you really need? You rather eat that 1800 calories of healthy stuff and trust me your body will appreciate it more. You may also see some results in weight loss too. One thing I noticed is that when I eat more greens, things that don't have preservatives and that are fresh my body responds better. I feel better, not sluggish, not sick and that is how I like it to be.

Thanksgiving Around the Corner

I have been in this position as a Chiropractic Assistant for almost a year and a half. Honestly I didn't think much of it when I first took the job. The First Wealth is Health - Ralph Waldo Emerson

The First Wealth is Health - Ralph Waldo Emerson

This is something a lot of us take for granted and don't take care of it.
Imagine getting a brand new car that is worth well over $60,000. What do you do? Do you just put whatever gas into it when you know it needs premium unleaded gas? Do you just leave it outside all the time to endure all nature has to offer as far as weather? Will you wash it? How often will you maintenance it?

Of course you are going to take care of that car! It's a valuable item and something worth that much needs the best of care. Now reconsider that and put yourself in the picture. Your health. Even if you had the money for the most expensive car in the world but you were sick all of the time, in pain all the time and tired all the time would you be able to enjoy that nice car? Would you be able to enjoy life in general? Probably not. You will try but still won't be satisfied.

Your health, your body to be more exact is that expensive car. In fact the most valuable thing we own is not a car, a house, a computer or anything else. It's our own body. If we are not taking care of it then just like a car it's going to break down, it's going to have problems, it's going to get sick and leave us unhappy with it.

Think of a used car that you just picked up. A junker to be more exact. It's always needing to go into the shop to get repaired. The blinker it's working, it's making a lot of noises, the power steering isn't working etc. We can list a lot of trouble that goes on with a car. Our body is like that. It all breaks down to how we take care of it. We can't enjoy that car if it's not working at 100% nor can we enjoy our life unless our body is at 100%.

It's time to think twice about everything you do. I'm not saying quit eating the things you love, or not to do things that you want to. I'm saying you need to take care of your body. Everyone's body is like a car, we need take care of it from day 1. That's why a car loses value as soon as you drive it off the sales lot.

Diabetes is up 700%

Diabetes is up 700% according to the Maximized Living Blog article just recently published.

This article was very interesting for me to read because my grandma died of diabetes and my family (according to the doctor) is at high risk for getting diabetes. This honestly has me concerned. Especially since I would like to live a long time and I would love if my loved ones will live a long healthy life. What is a healthy life? One that doesn't require me to not be naturally living, no drugs, no oxygen mask, no wheelchair. I mean who wants to retire to nursing home? Most people want to retire, travel, do the things they love, and spend time with their loved ones.

On November 22nd, 2011 Maximized Living is hosting a free webinar about Diabetes and things you can do to reverse it and/or prevent it. We need to stop accepting things as they are told and explore other ways to take care of themselves. Meaning I can sit here and accept that I will get diabetes and die because the doctors says I will get it and I should just accept it. If you're like me you learn it's your life, it's your health, don't let anyone tell you how to live it.

If you have or know someone who have diabetes or prediabetes you should come in to a Maximized Living Clinic and learn about natural ways to stand up for your own health. If you  are in the Twin Cities area you can come in for a free consultation at Bandana Chiropractic and Wellness Center in Roseville Minnesota. Call 651-646-2050 and mention this blog.

Positive Mind

Yesterday I was a jerk and it was hard not to be. I was impatient, unhappy, very grumpy and even so I didn't want to be but I was. How many of us have those days? It happens, not everything will go our way and because of that we let it get to us. I remember an old commercial where one person helps another person and that person helps another which in the end that other person helps another.

Bad attitude is also that contagious. When we are having those tough days we need to take a moment and let ourselves cool down then let all the positives come our way. When I left my second job yesterday I was happy, laughing and joking around. The reason? Positive people with laughter. The lesson learned is that sometimes when things are down try your best to laugh and smile. It will make your day happier and in turn that makes you healthier.

I am fortunate to have so many positive people surrounding me. :)

Maximized Living : Advanced and Core Plans

Ok so for the past few weeks I have changed my diet slowly but surely. I have cut out sugars, a lot of grains and processed foods. Which it is amazing how much of it is in the grocery store. It's near impossible to just walk into the store and find things that fit right into your Core plan for Maximized Living not to even mention Advanced Plan. My Advanced plan breakfast has been the green 3 gods Greed Organic Yogurt mixed with my Maximized Living French Vanilla Protein Powder and my Dynamic Greens. Then to sweeten the deal for myself I put in frozen berries and I throw it into the freezer so the whole mixture is a bit more palatable. And I won't deny not feeling less as complete without sugars and grains. There are days I go without grains and even so I'm full I feel deprived. It's hard but you have to work at it and try to cut it out.

It's like when I crave pizza when my brother buys it. I drink a whole bottle of water and then I snack on some frozen fruit. It tends to help but it takes time. Amazing enough a few months ago when I started cutting out processed foods little by little I was amazed how my taste buds changed. I went to Dunn Bros with some coworkers for a meeting and saw a "fruit" smoothie. I got excited and ordered it... blah!!!! It was like drinking syrup, I never realized how much sugar was in it. Put it this way my taste buds had gotten sensitive which is a good thing. It was that moment I realized that there are so many foods out there that has been dumped in sugar that we don't need but because we are so used to eating and drinking it our taste buds don't know the difference. Did you know that my first encounter with soda/pop was in a hospital when I was sick? The nurse gave me coke so that it will help me lower my high fever. I hated it, because I never had it before. Now after growing up I'm used to it and every once and awhile I crave it.

Today, think about three processed foods that you like then go a week without it. The purpose is to be healthier but also it's a self realization that it is very very polluted with things we don't need. Lunch today I am going for an Advanced meal which is chicken wrapped in spinach. Yummy! I'm slowly accepting the lack of grains with my meats but as I said before it takes time.

Sugar is in everything!

Today I watched an past webinar about Weightloss and Food. These can be viewed at http://www.maximizedliving.com. It was a big eye opener to review somethings. The topic today is Sugar because it's something that not a lot of us look for when we read food labels at the grocery store. Did you know that in majority of the items you look at in the grocery store there is sugar or high fructose corn syrup (a form of sugar) in them?

Why is this a big deal? Well if you're trying to lose weight you know you should be avoiding sugars. This is not limited to chocolates, bakery goods and just candy in general. Look at the labels of the foods you are eating. The peanut butter that I "oh so love so much" Skippy has sugar in it. It's something that I will have to cute bac on. Even fruits have natural sugars in it, for example apples and pears. If you want an apple try a Granny Smith Apple or if you really crave fruits go for the berries, less sugar.

While watching the video there was an interesting statement the doctors said. "The longer the ingredients list the more likely it's NOT GOOD for you." Also they said, "If it's not something you would normally put in your pantry then it's probably NOT GOOD for you." Good statements. A lot of things we read off the back doesn't make sense or we have no idea what it means.

Max T3 as a Family Activity

This past weekend has been an awesome Labor Day Weekend. Friday I went to the Minnesota State Fair, and it is hard to keep  healthy while being at the State Fair but you have to be aware. One thing I learn is to walk around and choose what you want. It's simply just saying don't eat with your eyes but eat with you actual stomach. Don't choose things just because you need to have a little this and a little that. If you do that, in the end your wallet is hurting and so is your stomach. I was careful on Friday plus I won myself a big stuff animal.
What really made my weekend awesome is the fact that it was the major weekend where I implemented some new healthy habits into my life. I have been working out every morning already but now I am adding some Maximized Living Protein, Dynamic Greens and Detox into my diet. Honestly my energy has been growing incredibly. That makes me excited for every day that comes forth.

I also got to show my sister Max T3 and she is impressed. Actually this weekend she kept asking me let's do the 12 minute thing. Amazing, so I have been being held accountable to do the Max T3 from my sister. It makes me excited. A lot of time what is needed is someone to work out with you. Though she doesn't wake up and drink the protein, fish oil, vitamin d3 or anything of that sort she is still working to keep herself healthier.

Here is one thing I am sure a lot of people face every day. We do live in the medical model and hey my little sister is in Physical Therapy school. So not every you in your family are flexible about looking into alternative health like chiropractic. Take it slow and just educate. I was talking to my sister about health and she was very anti chiropractic but as we talked she admitted she knew nothing to judge. So we both agreed that before she could entirely go against what field I am and chiropractic in general that she needs to learn a bit more. The same goes for the medical model. We have to be willing to see their research and then make our decision. You need to see both sides of the coin before choosing your path.

Vitamin D3

When was the last time you walked down the health and nutrition aisle at your local store? What was there? You probably remember looking at weight loss items then there were the health bars then finally all the vitamins. I never thought much of the vitamins. Personally when I was growing up the only one I really used was Vitamin E that my mom would mix with some lotion and rub on my face. The results was amazing skin for part of my youth. What about everything else? There's almost Vitamin for A-Z.

This blog entry today is about Vitamin D3 because I am catching a little cold and want to share what I have learned about Vitamin D3 with my fellow readers. Did you know that our body naturally synthesize this when we are exposed to the sun? Last year I went to a Vaccine Workshop with guest speaker Dr. Mayer Eisenstein. The Vitamin D3 actually helps boost your immune system and fight illness. He went on and recommended that when you are ill you should be taking your body weight in Vitamin D3. So for example let's say I weight 150 lbs I should be taking 150,000 IU in Vitamin D3. That is what I am doing, starting today. On a regular basis you should be taking some Vitamin D3 to keep your immune system at bay.

If the natural way of synthesizing Vitamin D3 in our body is natural sunlight we should be trying to spend more time outside in the sun. In our office we have Homefirst Vitamin D3 which are 50,000 IU a pill and we have Maximized Living Vitamin D3 which is 5,000 IU a pill. We have to be more aware about our health. I am going to learn more about natural health and share it with everyone.

Feel free to comment and share about your experience with Vitamin D3 below.

Max T3 Challenge - Abs

I spent my Saturday doing the Max T3 Ab work out. My thoughts on it is that it's very much like the work out I did with my personal trainer when I decided to do just abs and glutes for one day. The main difference is that it surge and burst trainings, so there are breaks inbetween. A very good things that the instructor kept saying is that you will get the results from what you put into it. So when you do cheats you are cheating yourself from the results that you want. Something to definitely keep in mind.

The next morning I went to the gym and boy did my abs hurt. I did my round of squats, hack squats with cardio. Yes I have been lazy and avoiding all of this but the thing is to move to the future and continue. :)

To Vaccinate or Not to Vaccinate?

http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/parenting/japan-suspends-use-of-two-vaccines-after-4-children-die-2462104

This is an interesting article that I read while reading some other articles in regards to Vaccinations. I honestly am not very educated in Vaccines but my knowledge might be that of the average person. It's been a big debate on whether or not to vaccinate your children or even yourself. There has been articles on the link between autism-vaccines, then questions on what is actually put into your vaccines.

Here are a few books that have been recommended to our patients to read in order to learn more about Vaccines:

"Don't Vaccinate! Before Your Educate" by Dr. Mayer Eisenstein MD, JD, MPH

This discuss Vaccinations in general.

"MAKE an INFORMED VACCINE DECISION" by Dr. Mayer Eisenstein MD, JD, MPH

This book is good to read because it discuss several vaccines out there and the disease. Everything is properly cited from other research which you can follow up with.

I not read these books yet and will be reading them coming up next month then I will write my own review. I know that this is a sensitive topic and will probably inspire a deep debate but one thing that I have learned is that before you do anything is to go out and do the research yourself. That includes reading from all points of views and then from there make an informed decision. That is my personal goal with everything in life and Vaccinations is no different.

Max T3 Challenge - Week 3

Ok honestly I have been lazy but that doesn't stop me from implementing exercises in my daily routine. I have to make myself be more and more consistent on using the video to implement these exercises too. Now in our office we encourage everyone to look at the 5 Essentials of Maximized Living. These includes:
1. Maximized Mind
2. Maximized Nerve Supply
3. Maximized Nutrition
4. Maximized Oxygen to the Muscle and Exercise
5. Minimizing Toxins

I wake thinking positively about everything that is going on. You have to think about the good things and how everything will get better. This will help your outlook on everything feel better. Don't let yourself stress out on things that are going on. First of all it's counter productive and second it causes subluxations. Yeah bad things happen but let it out and move on. It's the best way to be successful otherwise. If you start feeling really stressed out then take a break. A quick break helps.

Maximized Nerve Supply, ok this has Chiropractic Adjustments written all over it but that is not where it ends. In order to maximize your nerve supply it's to help yourself attain a 43-45 degree curve back in your neck. Trust me an adjustment helps but it won't optimize your goal to reaching it. To reach it you must do your traction every day which I am doing about 60 in the morning and another 60 at night. Since I'm lazy and not easily motivated to do traction, I do them in 10-15 sets. This way I can do things in between and they don't seem as long and as repetitive. So for example as soon as I get up I start off with 10-15 reps then I go brush my teeth then do another 10-15 reps, then go change and do another set. I am also starting to walk around with head weights for about 5-10 minutes while I am in the office. :) I had a -12 curve when I started here and my goal is to get a POSTIVE 43 degree curve. That is the most optimal.

Nutrition... okay so I'm not ideal as this goes. But I have become more and more aware of this since I have started. I am a bit upset now because since I have been implementing more vegetables, fruits and cutting high fructose corn syrup... my taste buds are more sensitive. I opened a box of cereal as my "on the go" food and ended up cringing... TOO MUCH SUGAR. Ouch. Then I went to Dunn Bros with my coworkers for a meeting and thought... ooo.. fruit smoothie. Yeah... not natural as I discovered as I tried to drink it. It must be mostly syrup because it was like drinking plain sugar. My diet isn't perfect and probably will never be but it's the small steps that improves my life. I have cut the fast food from my diet and so when I go for fast food I have to be careful because I get sick now. There is a really good workshop I would recommend which is the "Extreme Makeover". You learn so much about food in that workshop, another recommendation would be the Maximized Living Nutrition Plan book. I can't fully commit to a plan but I implement little by little.

Exercise is something I try to do more and more. Especially with Max T3. Keep in tune for future updates with this.

Detox? Uh... well I am avoiding more and more toxins in my diet but I have not formally done a Detox yet. We have a cell detox available in our office but I have been procrastinating trying it. I will, I promise.

So there is my blog for the day.

MaxT3 Workout -KJ- Wk 1

Here we go! I started the Max T3 workout on Monday the 27th of June. I am getting married August 5th so I decided to do the 6 day a week workout plan. I am generally a pretty in shape person but have been "too busy" lately to work out so this is really going to be a challenge for me.

Monday, warm up and then upper body. WOW! After 2 minutes of warm up I am sweating, my heart is racing, and I want to sit down. I do not have anywhere in my home to put a pull-up bar so I am using the bands. It doesn't seem too hard when you are doing it but I know that the next day I will be feeling it! 12 minutes seems to take forever when you are working out, funny how fast it goes by when you are reading or watching tv!

Tuesday, I wake up and feel like my arms are going to fall off. Funny the part that seems to hurt the most is my tri-cepts, I must not use them much. Today is LEGS! I like working out my legs! My mom has amazing legs, must be from 52 years of walking 3 miles a day! My mission is to have legs as nice as my mom! You wont see my legs much under my wedding dress because it is huge but I still am interested in working them out now! The leg workout I feel much more instantly then I did the arms. Especially when we do the exercise where we go up on our toes over and over again. Man! My calf's were burning! I loved it!

I cant wait to see whats next!

Max T3 Challenge - Week 1

Helen's Entry
So we started the challenge this week. I am doing the 3 times a week with visits to the gym. My stand point is that I already go to the gym on a weekly basis and work out with a personal trainer but my visits to the gym isn't as frequent as I would like because I am lazy. Actually my recovery from the exercises have been pretty quick, I can feel the work out. The focus seems to be muscles in interval trainings.
This morning I woke up and thought to myself, I don't wanna. I can skip one day. I still did it. Why? It's 12 minutes and that goes by quick enough. Also I have to hold myself accountable as well as Kjersti holds me accountable too.

Thanks,
Helen

Max T3 Challenge

So recently in our office we got a new shipment of Maximized Living Max T3 DVDs. It's a new exercise dvd made to encourage people to work out efficiently with 12 minute workouts. There are two programs available:

Time Crunched
  Which is a 3 days a week program x 12 minutes per day = 36 minutes / week

Vintage
  Which is 6 days a week program x 12 minutes per day = 72 minutes/ week

My co-worker Kjersti and I will each be doing one of the two programs and keeping you up to date with our progress. Kjersti will be utilizing the Vintage program and I will be doing the Time Crunched Program. To spice up my program I will also be visiting the gym once a week on thursdays to work with a Personal Trainer.

I know that nutrition is a big part of it too but I will try to eat as I normally do in order to keep that constant and the only change will be the Max T3 program. Wish us luck as we try to achieve our goals with this new program. :)

Why Wellness after restoring the curve?

This is an interesting question my sister asked me. It sort of sucks having to debate with my sister about chiropractic because she doesn't "believe" in it. Makes me laugh because she is a physical therapy student and so there are different opinions about chiropractic care.
We have had our arguments and I admit that I need to train myself to handle her questions better. This will be a topic that I will ask the doctors I work for to do a video on because I am sure a lot of people ask this.

When you start care and do correction eventually you get to the point for Wellness Care. That is when you come in less often just to maintain your spine the way it should be. Then my sister asked me why? If it works then why do we need to come in so often to maintain? Also how often should you be coming in for Wellness care?

Well when I talk to her tonight, after I have thought it over a bit, there are quite a few interesting points that I can bring up. Why do we brush our teeth every day? In order to take care and maintain our teeth after using it through out the day. Her come back will probably be..."well, don't you teach people  how to maintain their spines properly?". We do. You have to consider the fact that just like your teeth you are constantly using your spine to do everything. The only way you aren't putting your spine through any kind of stress... wear and tear... etc... If you just lay down properly and never move. Impossibly... because you would need to get up at some point to eat, drink, walk around, relieve yourself... etc.

Next point, you go to the dentist to have your teeth cleaned. Recommended twice a year. Now think about that... if you asked a dentist if there are people who should probably get it cleaned more frequently or less frequently? They would say yes. It depends on the person and how they use their bodies.

Same thing again with exercise. You do things to maintain your body health. So why don't you just go exercise twice a year? A good hour twice a year? Is that really productive? No.. you need to be consist to continue to be healthy and get good results. So after you get that six pack you've been dying for, you don't need to work again for another 6 months right? No you need to maintain it. Just like your spine, after you get the spine fixed after 6 months a lot can happen to it.

Same thing with eating healthy. We all know that we should do it. So lets say you will eat healthy twice a year. How productive is that for your body? Not very? It's a very similar concept. In order to continue to get good results and feel great from your healthy meals, you need to be consistent on it. Let's say you work so hard on losing weight by cutting out the soda, ice cream, sugars and fats. Then you get skinny and start eating it all again and just eating healthy twice a year... Will you stay healthy skinny? I highly highly doubt it.

So since I've rambled I just wanted to let people know that chiropractic is a healthy lifetime decision. The reason why so many people who think chiropractic thinks it's just pain relief for the moment or it utterly doesn't work. It's because you aren't thinking of the Wellness Chiropractic where you take care of yourself in the long term : Fighting and Preventing Disease.

Suffer from "Chronic" Fatigue?

Okay, so the other day Dr Trent and one of my coworkers Penny comes into the office with a bit of concern. The reason? Apparently on the drive over they heard a radio ad for a new drug for "Chronic" fatigue. If you're tired, you don't need a nap anymore in the middle of the day... take a new drug? Ok Ok... so being tired all the time isn't good but obviously an excuse for another new drug. Which can cause all sorts of side effects.

The Maximized Living website posted an entry this past week about fatigue. It states that 90% of people in a study done among 6800 people shown improvements in fatigue by engaging themselves in a regular exercise program.

Science Daily posts that low intensity exercise can increase energy and decrease fatigue. That is pretty good stuff to know. Keeping your body active helps the blood flow throughout your body and in the end with the efficiency of everything moving your body you feel better.

WebMD posts another article about Exercise fighting fatigue. There is an interesting statement in there about how we live in a society today where people are looking for the next quick energy drink. Painful. I personally don't like the crashing effect after an energy drink. The first time I had an energy drink was when I had to work after a Relay for Life event. When I got home my body literally crashed. I felt weak, barely could move, and I was extremely tired. Also when I took the energy drink my heart sped up and I began getting all shaky. Quick energy? Call it scary energy.

Dr. Scott just filmed a new episode for the video series on exercise. I will be posting them soon. I do encourage everyone to watch them.

Episode 6 : How Much Water Should I drink?

Okay so this one is important. Did you know most people out there aren't drinking enough water? What is enough? You hear 8 glasses? Alrighty then? But my glass cup is smaller than yours? What does that mean?

Dr. Trent Iverson goes over what is a good recommended amount of water to consume a day.

Episode 5: Diabetes, Fruits and Vegetables

Did you know that certain fruits and vegetables consist of more sugar than others?

Episode 4: Farmers Market

It's the time of year again where you can spend your weekends and some week days shopping at the Farmers Market. My Mom loves the Farmers Market but as a shopper there are things we have to consider. Have you considered how fresh the food are? Are they really organic? Here is the next of Dr. Hugh Wegwerth's series of video blogs making sure we ask the right questions the next time we are at the Farmer's Market.

Episode 3: High Fructose Corn Syrup

I remember probably year or so ago that I saw a series of commercials that was in response to the concern of high fructose corn syrup.

The truth is that High Fructose Corn Syrup is bad but just like a lot of things out there we aren't as educated about it as we should be.

Dr. Hugh Wegwerth actually did a workshop last week on Cholesterol and Heart. One of the topics he goes through includes High Fructose Corn Syrup. Once I get those videos edited I will post a link here to share with everyone.

Episode 2 : Detoxification

Finally I can add a new post with a video. This past friday I got the opportunity to record a series of short episodes and several health topics. Feel free to request a video response to any of your health questions. This first one is about Detox.

This saturday there will be a free "Detox Workshop" at Bandana Chiropractic and Wellness Center.

SimplyThick: Public Health Notification - Risk of Life-Threatening Bowel Condition

Simply Thick, LLC is announcing a voluntary recall of its SimplyThick thickening gel products manufactured at a food processing plant owned and operated by Thermo Pac, LLC. This voluntary recall is limited to only those products manufactured at the Stone Mountain, Georgia plant. The SimplyThick thickening gel products manufactured at the Thermo Pac, LLC Stone Mountain plant are being recalled because FDA advised the company that Thermo Pac, LLC failed to file with the FDA a scheduled process designed to ensure that vegetative cells (harmful bacteria) of possible public health significance are destroyed during the manufacturing process. See the company press release for additional information.
[Posted 05/20/2011]
ISSUE: FDA notified parents, caregivers and health care providers not to feed SimplyThick, a thickening agent for management of swallowing disorders, to infants born before 37 weeks gestation. The product may cause necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a life-threatening condition characterized by inflammation and death of intestinal tissue.
BACKGROUND: FDA first learned of adverse events possibly linked to the product on May 13, 2011. To date, the agency is aware of 15 cases of NEC, including two deaths, involving premature infants who were fed SimplyThick for varying amounts of time. The product was mixed with mothers’ breast milk or infant formula. Illnesses have been reported from at least four different medical centers around the country. The illnesses of which FDA is aware involve premature infants. SimplyThick was added to the feeding regimen of those infants, who later developed NEC, to help with swallowing difficulties stemming from complications of premature birth.
The product is sold in packets of individual servings and in 64-ounce dispenser bottles. The product can be purchased from distributors and local pharmacies throughout the United States.

RECOMMENDATION: Health care providers should stop administering the product to premature infants. Parents and caregivers who have questions or concerns related to the use of the product and/or who have medical concerns should contact their health care provider. See the photographs at the link below for images of the product.

Children Chiropractic Care

This is a pretty important topic because most people do not consider chiropractic for children. Well kids are too young and they have not yet done much to put stress on their bodies. Not true! One of the most traumatic events in your life that happens to your spine is being pushed out of your mother during labor. Imagine how much the body has to twist and turn during that event. Now beyond the womb of your mother a child do put a lot of stress on their body and in turn causes subluxations.

Here is a very interesting link I found that is for ICPA, a non-profit organization.

In our office we encourage parents to consider their children's health. There are several symptoms that we don't consider to be abnormal for children : bed wetting, ADHD, headaches, ear infections, tonsillitis and so much more.

Now think in your mind of a child you care about? Think about their health and how you can take a step to helping them live a healthier life. :)

Bandana Health Video Series: Episode 1 (Fish Oil with Dr. Trent Iverson)

This past friday morning I got a moment with Dr. Trent Iverson at Bandana Chiropractic and Wellness. The funny thing is that I went out with a few friends the other day and we talked about things to do to stay healthy. One thing we all have in common is that we are taking some sort of fish oil. That's a good thing. I am trying to convince my family of it's benefits.

Remember when talking to your family about fish oil to bring up the benefits of it. Fish oil helps replenish with omega-3 and good fats that a lot of us are lacking. I have seen improvements with my eczema, pretty much gone, and have noticed that my skin in general is much more clear. Also from what I have read there are benefits to fish oil that helps with the heart and hair.

Random note for everyone out there. My co-worker feeds fish oil to her cats and they have wonderful fur and are much more healthy. Interesting isn't it? If anyone wants a specific topic to be discussed please do reply here in my blog or on my youtube channel.

I took the liberty to look up a few popular birth control pills out there to list a few that contains drospirenone. Be safe everyone:

* Yasmin
* Yaz

Fish Oil

Yesterday we got in a new shipment of fish oil : large liquid bottles and small liquid bottles. It's pretty exciting because it's one of the products in our office that is in high demand. The one we carry is by. Innate Choice Fish Oil.Why is it important to have fish oil?

Well that's a good question because I'm not 100% sure I can answer that. I know that it's good for your heart, your immune system, it helps with anti aging and so much more. So I will tell everyone what, next week I will get Dr. Trent Iverson of Bandana Chiropractic and Wellness Center to do a short video on the benefits of Fish Oil.
Other upcoming events for next week? Well Memorial Day is one then here in the office Dr. Hugh Wegwerth will be hosting a workshop on Insulin. Pretty important stuff.

If anyone is curious on how to take liquid fish oil, it's not that bad. For starters:
Week 1: 1 teaspoon a day
Week 2: 2 teaspoons a day
Week 3: 3 teaspoons (a tablespoon) a day
Then every week after continue the 1 tablespoon a day. One of my coworkers will take the tablespoon and mix the fish oil in her food and drinks. I take mine like I would've taken cough syrup as a kid, a tablespoonful straight. It doesn't taste bad the texture is just... oily. Hence it's fish "oil". But I know it's good for me and not all good stuff we do is fun.

Spine Fit Workshop - Dr. Scott Halida

This is the first of several workshops that I will be filming in order to share some of the knowledge I learn. Also it's a good way for me to review what I have learned. Dr. Scott Halida hosted a workshop about Spine Fit which teaches you about the things you do on a regular basis and how to do them while putting the least amount of stress onto your spine. This in turn will help you prevent pains and disease.

Dr. Scott opens with a reference to a new book we have in our office : "The Wellness Prevention Paradigm" by Dr. Chestnut. I haven't read it yet but have heard quotes from the book. Next week I will buy the book and start reading them give you a review of what I think of the book. I have divided the videos up by sections so it would be easier to refer to them later:

Bending:

Sitting and Ergonomics

Wobble Disk and Reader

Daily Stretching and Yoga Moves

Sleeping Well

Introduction from a CA

My name is Helen and I am a Chiropractic Assistant (CA) at Bandana Chiropractic and Wellness Center. When I started this job, I took it as a job. Today, a year later, I take it not just as a job but also as a way of living because that is what we do here. Chiropractic here is not the only focus, there are the five essentials:

1. Maximized Mind
2. Maximized Nerve Supply
3. Maximized Nutrition
4. Maximized Exercise
5. Minimized Toxins

In this past year I have changed my life, slowly but changing. I am more aware of what I eat, how I exercise and overall what I do in a day to day basis. One thing we do here is make sure everyone is educated about health. What doctor's place do you ever go to provides you so many workshops and opportunities to learn about your health? Not many.

So now that I'm learning about health I want to spread the word because so many of us are taught to take pills if we ill, surgery if the doctor says so and we think it's a death sentence when a doctor says we will die. That's not the case. I met someone a few weeks ago we had cancer and was told by his doctor that he had no more than 4 months to live. That was a few years ago. What did he do to change his life? Everything. He cleansed his body, he changed how he ate, he exercised more and kept a "I can do it" attitude.

I have seen so many miracles through these doors that I know that this knowledge is valuable. Did you know that headaches more than 6 times a year is an indication that something is wrong? That's what the American Medical journal says. Well then why do so many people suffer from migraines and headaches thinks it's ok? Because it's common and the common symptom is taken care of by drugs which in the end doesn't fix the initial problem. I had headaches almost 4 times a week when I started. Where am I now? Less than once a week and so much more of my life is improving. I don't have as bad of allergies as I used to, I sleep better, I have more energy to do things and my heart doesn't hurt. (A doctor told me that nothing was wrong with my heart when I complained of heart pains).

From a weekly basis at least I will be updating anyone and everyone about the things I learn to improve myself. Hopefully you will be able to take that and improve yourself. Let's live to 100 as healthy as possible together! :) THE POWER IS ON!
